The Greatest Specific Risk: Infection
Infection is the most feared complication with penile implants. If an infection occurs, the implant generally has to be removed. The risk can be significantly reduced through several measures:
- A short operating time, made possible by our extensive experience with this procedure
- Modern implants with an antibacterial coating
- Consistent intraoperative antisepsis and sterile technique
- Precise suturing and careful wound closure
- Optimal wound drainage (individually adjusted)
- Abstaining from smoking and optimally controlled diabetes before the procedure
Other Possible Risks
Mechanical Failure
Modern three-piece implants are technically very reliable. Mechanical defects can occur after many years but are rare. In the event of a defect, the implant can be replaced through a revision procedure.
Positioning Problems
An incorrectly positioned pump or a reservoir that does not sit correctly can affect comfort. This complication depends directly on the surgeon's precision.
Changes in Sensitivity
Temporary changes in the sensitivity of the penis are possible after the procedure. Permanent loss of sensitivity is rare when the procedure is performed with care.
Pain After the Procedure
Mild pain in the first few days is normal and subsides. Persistent or severe pain should be reported immediately.

Age and Surgical Success
Age plays no role in the success of the procedure. Studies show identical outcomes for patients under and over 75 years of age. A limitation exists in the case of cognitive impairment such as dementia.
Later Urological Treatments
A professionally implanted penile prosthesis does not interfere with later treatment of the prostate or other urological procedures. This concern is unfounded when the implantation was performed by an experienced surgeon.
